Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Post’ Awarded Best Film of 2017 by National Board of Review

The National Board of Review (NBR) released its annual Best Films for the year of 2017. Steven Spielberg’s latest historical drama about the publication of the confidential Pentagon Papers, The Post, was named Best Film.

The NBR’s Top Ten films of the year are usually the first to be published; something that can be used as an early prediction for the Academy Awards top prize’s nominations. As “The Wrap” pointed out, 28 of the last 43 Best Picture nominations first appeared on the NBR’s Top Ten list.

Including The Post, many films that we expected to see come awards season poked their heads including Dunkirk, Phantom Thread, Call Me by Your Name, and The Florida Project. More surprising, though pleasant inclusions, involved Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, and Downsizing. Genre films were well represented as well with the hits Baby Driver, Get Out, and Logan.
