Let’s get down to business.
Well, Disney certainly is. After a yearlong search across the globe, Hua Mulan has been found.
Popular Chinese actress Liu Tifei, nicknamed “Fairy Sister” for her innocent image, has won the hearts of the casting directors for Disney’s adaptation to the 1998 classic animated film Mulan. Thousands of actors across five continents were viewed by a team of casting directors looking for the perfect fit. Not only was the studio focusing on finding an ethnically Chinese actor, but the part also calls for incredible martial arts skills. The film tells the story of heroine Hua Mulan who takes her father’s place in war in 5th century China.
Lui, who is already a prevalent actress in China, is fluent in English and has acted in English alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li in 2008’s The Forbidden Kingdom and with Nicolas Cage in 2014’s Outcast. Liu has served as brand ambassador for Dior, Tissot, Garnier and Pantene.
Niki Caro, who recently directed The Zookeeper’s Wife, is directing the live-action adaptation of Mulan which will be released in 2019.
