Fans recently got their first glimpse of Avengers: Infinity War, the culmination of a decade of Marvel blockbusters.
The film’s cast is a laundry list of many of the top actors in Hollywood: Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, among a host of others. Not to mention the Chris trifecta: Evans, Pratt, and Hemsworth, playing Steve Rogers, Peter Quill, and Thor respectively.
Josh Brolin stars as Thanos, who made his first appearance in a few tantalizing frames of the first Avengers film back in 2012. Since then, Thanos has remained a connective thread throughout the various MCU storylines. With Infinity War, we can expect to see the biggest group of heroes yet band together to face Thanos.
The film is directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the team behind Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.
Although the trailer was met with all the hype we’ve come to expect for an upcoming Marvel release, it’s also something of a bittersweet moment. The trailer seems to hint at the end of an era for the classic Avengers, who may soon be making way for newcomers like Dr. Strange and Black Panther.
In the past, Marvel movies have drawn criticism for the lack of real stakes for the characters: It sometimes seems that no matter how epic the fight, all of our heroes come away unscathed — or if they don’t, a miracle cure or some other narrative sleight of hand will bring them back for the sequel. But this new trailer clearly shows a crowded field of good guys, and it may be time for our first generation of MCU heroes to pass the torch.
With so many of our beloved characters on-screen together, this latest installment has to be the most highly anticipated Marvel film yet.
Avengers: Infinity War is slated for a May 4, 2018 release.
