Following on the heels of the 90th Academy Awards ceremony, the lesser known 12th Asian Film Awards ceremony was held March 17th, 2018 in Macao. 25 awards were offered at the ceremony to Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Cantonese, and Indian films. Old top dogs of the Asian film industry dominated much of this years film awards ceremony. Here are three – have you heard of them? Time to test out your foreign film knowledge!
Filmmaker Feng Xiaogang snagged the award for Best Film with his feature Youth. Youth is a coming-of-age film set during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Watch the trailer below:
His contemporary Chen Kaige (known internationally for his film Farewell My Concubine) directed a mystical, supernatural film Legend of the Demon Cat, described by Variety as a “visual feast” (read Variety’s full review here). The film definitely feasted at this ceremony: it took home Best Supporting Actress, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design awards. Also – just as a fun trivia fact, the screenwriter for Legend of the Demon Cat is none other than Huang Huiling, who wrote the script for Ang Lee’s international blockbuster Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Of course, Hayao Miyazaki’s favorite composer Joe Hisaishi is still producing stunning soundtrack music and won the award for Best Original Music for Our Time Will Come, a film about Japanese occupation in Hong Kong.
And, a film that you may have heard of, but is currently breaking new ground in Mainland China: The Asian Film Award for Asia’s 2017 Highest Grossing Film, which is also the highest grossing film for China in all time is Wolf Warrior II, a nationalist film about an ex-soldier who fights against an extremist group in Africa.
